Today, Albania took a drastic step by severing relations with Iran - a country that has quite a few enemies. Who are they and what has driven them to this enmity?
Iran's foreign affairs are extremely complicated and yet
I will do my best to sum up Iran's allies and enemies in an excellent way:
Foes
1 – USA
This country has been described as the "Great Satan" by the Iranian government, so this does not need much explanation. Iran and the US have been bitter enemies since the Iranian revolution, and even more so since the election of Donald Trump.
But the conflict between them is not only about faith, but also about ethnicity and history: while Iran's population is predominantly Persian, Saudi Arabia is predominantly Arab. There has always been a rivalry between Persians and Arabs in the Middle East, and this has been going on for about 2000 years.
3 – Israel
Meanwhile, unlike America, Israel has been called "Little Satan" by the Iranian government.
Iranian leaders have strongly opposed the Jewish state since the Iranian revolution in 1979, and they are Hamas's biggest ally, supporting it financially and militarily.
Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Pakistan, and much of North Africa are allies of Saudi Arabia, and are therefore also considered potential threats.
At the same time, Iran does not like 14 of the world's leading economies.
The survey was conducted by the prestigious Pew last year in Sweden, Denmark, Spain, the Netherlands, the United States, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Australia, the UK, France, Canada, Japan and South Korea.
The institute said the 14 countries shared overwhelmingly unfavorable opinions of Iran with slight differences in the level of 'hostile feelings' towards the country.
allies
1 – Hezbollah/Lebanon
Since the establishment of the Islamic political party Hezbollah in Lebanon, it has been Iran's main ally in the Middle East, and they have supported it with military personnel and weapons.
This is largely due to their shared religious ties: As I mentioned before, Iran is a Shia-majority state, and Hezbollah is also a Shia political party.
2 – Russia
The Russian Federation and Iran have been strong allies, largely because of their shared geopolitical interests: both oppose a strong US presence in the Middle East, and this has been the driving force behind their alliance. Recently, Iran has also bought a lot of Russian weapons, as a counterattack to Saudi Arabia's purchase of American weapons.
3 – Syria
If the Syrian Civil War has proven one thing, it is that Iran is ready to do anything to keep Bashar al-Assad in power and keep him as president of Syria. This is because he and the rest of the ruling party belong to a small minority of Islam, called "Alawites", who are very close to Shia Islam.
However, the Syrian population is overwhelmingly part of Sunni Islam, which does not see the Alawites as Muslims, but as a deviant sect.
4 – India
This may come as a surprise to many, yet India is one of Iran's most valued allies. Recently, India has revealed that it will double its imports of Iranian oil. While in 2017, the Chabahar port was expanded on the southeast coast of Iran, with the help of the government of India. The Chabahar port provides an alternative route for India to Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan. /Euronews Albania
