The battle for Mariupol is not over

Ukrainian forces are standing against Russia in the southern port city of Mariupol, officials say, despite some reports suggesting the battle was nearing an end. Deputy mayor Serhiy Orlov told the BBC that "the battles for Mariupol continue."

He also denied reports of a naval brigade, which posted on Facebook about finishing ammunition and facing a "last battle."

"Information about marines is false. I don't comment on fakes."

"The Russians temporarily invaded part of the city. Ukrainian soldiers continue to protect central and southern parts of the city, as well as industrial areas and so on," Orlov said.

In a Facebook post, Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi said the military still had stable and open lines of communication with its soldiers inside the city.

The military is doing "the possible and impossible" to save lives and fight against Russian forces, he wrote.

Mariupol lies between the pro-Russian separatist regions Donetsk and Luhansk in the east and annexed Crimea in the south. Taking over the city has been the main goal of the Russian offensive.

Western officials are warning that this is a "highly important window" for vital support for Ukraine, as Russia prepares to double, or triple the striking force it has in the country's eastern donbas region.

At conferences, officials say Russia is reequipping its combat units and adding new troops - which will take time. Meanwhile, Western economic and military aid to Ukraine could be valuable in preparing for any renewed offensive.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, said tens of thousands of people had been killed in Mariupol.

The BBC has not verified the figure, but reports from the region and refugees fleeing the city speak of bodies lying on the streets and most buildings damaged, or destroyed.
