Electric cars made in China entering the European market from tomorrow, July 5, will have to pay additional tariffs of up to 37.6% of their value to compensate for the "unfair advantages" they enjoy in the Asian country.

According to the Commission, consultations with the Chinese government have intensified in recent weeks, following an exchange of views between European Commission Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis and Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao. Contacts are continuing at the technical level with a view to reaching a WTO-compliant solution that adequately addresses the concerns raised by the European Union. However, if no agreement is reached before next November, the tariffs will remain in place for a period of five years.

After the European Commission's preliminary investigation, Chinese companies presented their claims about the "unfair" state subsidies they receive from Beijing, resulting in small adjustments to the level of tariffs. BYD Group will face 17.4% tariffs, Geely Group 19.9% and SAIC Company will face 37.6%.
