The European Union must review its vision for the enlargement of the European Union with the Western Balkans. This is what the Foreign Minister of Greece, Jorgo Gjerapetriti, said during his speech at the roundtable on economic and geopolitical developments in Athens.

Addressing the topic "Geopolitical conflicts: What are the prerequisites for sustainable peace?". Gerapetritis emphasized the importance of dialogue with neighbors to prevent conflicts, comparing it to a football game without the support team to correct mistakes.

Regarding the European prospects of Albania and North Macedonia, Gerapetritis emphasized the importance of the continued preservation of international law, expressing concerns about the rule of law in Albania and reaffirming Greece's commitment to the Prespa Agreement with North Macedonia.

"The hopes of the Balkan countries for EU membership depend on three conditions: EU legislation, international law and treaties, as well as democracy and the rule of law. There can be no tolerance for these matters. "Greece supports the hopes of the countries of the Western Balkans to enter the EU, although Albania is facing criticism for corruption," said the Greek minister.

The Greek top diplomat expressed concern over the imprisonment and sentencing of Fredi Beleri to 20 months in prison, saying: "There are serious concerns about the principles of applying the rule of law. It is essential for us, Europeans, to preserve diversity and protect all minorities. The road it's there, but we need clear evidence of full respect."

Gerapetritis underlined the instability of the Western Balkans, emphasizing the historical imperative to maintain the momentum built over 20 years through the Thessaloniki Agenda.

He said that Greece is committed and prioritizes the inclusion of all Western Balkan countries in the EU and will continue to do so. He called the region 'a real minefield' and underlined that it was historically necessary to preserve the dynamics built 20 years ago with the Thessaloniki agenda.
