Speculation on Biden's mental health, White House: The president does not
US President, Joe Biden

US President Joe Biden does not have Alzheimer's or dementia and "knows how to get the job done," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters after senior Democrats acknowledged that concerns about the president's mental state are "legitimate".

US President Joe Biden does not have Alzheimer's or dementia and "knows how to get the job done," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters after senior Democrats acknowledged that concerns about the president's mental state are "legitimate".

Looking visibly flustered, Biden slurred his words and struggled to finish sentences during last week's debate against former President Donald Trump. The 81-year-old's performance has been described as a disaster by US news agencies and Democratic Party donors, some of whom have called on Biden to immediately suspend his presidential campaign.

"We understand the concerns, we understand, the president did not have a good night," Jean-Pierre told reporters at a briefing later in the afternoon.

Echoing Biden's explanation that he "had a cold" and "had a hoarse voice," Jean-Pierre insisted the president "knows how to get the job done" and "knows how to bounce back" after a setback.

Asked directly if Biden suffered from "Alzheimer's, some form of dementia or similar illness" that would explain why he "couldn't give coherent answers" during the debate, Jean-Pierre simply replied: "No."
