The EU opposes Poland and Hungary's ban on Ukrainian grain

The European Commission objected to the bans imposed by Poland and Hungary on Ukraine's wheat imports.

The two countries said the measures are necessary to protect their agricultural sectors from cheap imports.

The bans apply to cereals, dairy products, sugar, fruit, vegetables and meat, and will be in place until the end of June.

The commission said it is not up to member states to individually make trade policies.

He said unilateral actions would not be tolerated, but did not specify what measures he would take against Poland and Hungary.

"In such challenging times, it is essential to coordinate and align all decisions within the EU," said a spokesperson for this institution.

Most of Ukraine's wheat is exported via the Black Sea, but the Russian invasion last year cut off export routes and caused large quantities of the grain to end up in central Europe.

A deal with Russia, brokered by the UN and Turkey, allows Ukraine to resume exports by sea, but Ukraine says Russia is slowing the process with inspections.

Poland and Hungary made the decision at the weekend, after complaints from local farmers, who said they are being harmed by Ukrainian grains, which are sold cheaper./ REL
