The Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation following the robbery of a roadside apron in south London, upon which banksy mysteriously painted.

The painting on a STOP sign with three military drones, was unveiled near Commercial Way in Peckham, on Friday.

But within an hour the billboard was hijacked by one person, shortly after it was confirmed the painting was banksy, as witnesses photographed the scene.

Police are already treating it as theft but officers have yet to make any arrests.

One gallery owner told the BBC the artwork could be worth up to £500,000.

Jasmine Ali of Southwark Council said she was confident police would find who snatched the sign.

'We're not just talking about a road sign here, it's a piece of art that's been put there for the community.' It's a street art and it's for people," she said.

The Met said a new traffic sign had been put in place to avoid endangering road users.

A spokesperson added: "We are aware of footage being shared which shows the signage being removed

"Anyone who may have information about the incident or the location of the sign is asked to call police."
