The "easyJet" plane from Arrecife airport in Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, which was going to Liverpool's John Lennon airport, was not taking off due to the weight of the plane and unfavorable weather conditions.
The plane was due to depart Spain at 9.45pm on Wednesday 5 July but did not leave Spain until 11.24pm.
The pilot of the plane made an announcement saying that the only way to take off was to lighten the weight of the plane, and that was only done by disembarking a few passengers.
"It is hot, the wind is not strong and the handling is not the best. Given the current adverse weather conditions here in Lanzarote, as there are many of you on board and the runway is quite short, the aircraft is too heavy for to take off. With safety as the top priority, there is no way, in the current wind conditions, that the plane will leave the ground. There are several factors: it is too hot, the wind is not favorable, the direction is not the best." , said the pilot.
To motivate the passengers, they were offered 500 euros to get off voluntarily.
"Now you may be wondering what's going to happen now and that's why I came here to tell you. I've talked to our operations team and the only way to fix a problem with a heavy aircraft is to let's make it a little easier. If possible I would like to ask 20 volunteers to choose not to fly to Liverpool tonight. If anyone wants to volunteer there will be an incentive," the pilot continued.
Despite the backlash, the goal was eventually almost met, as 19 passengers got off the plane. Thanks to them, the plane was able to arrive regularly in England, although almost two hours late.
Passengers who accepted the money regularly returned the following day to the UK./ TGCOM
