The Ambassador Who Could Bring Down the British Government

The British Parliament will vote on Tuesday whether to launch an investigation into Prime Minister Keir Starmer over whether he misled the House of Commons regarding the appointment of former ambassador Peter Mandelson, the Times newspaper reports.

The British prime minister has been under fire for months over his decision to appoint Peter Mandelson, a controversial Labour Party figure who was a close friend of convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein, as ambassador to the United States.

Any such investigation could have serious implications for the political future of Starmer, whose tenure in Downing Street has been tarnished by the Mandelson affair.

So far, he has resisted pressure to resign over his decision to hire Mandelson, but if it is discovered that he knowingly misled parliament, he will find himself in a very difficult position.

According to the 'Times', the Speaker of the House of Commons, Lindsay Hoyle, will approve a request for parliament to debate and vote on whether its committee investigating possible breaches of parliamentary privilege should examine the matter.

Mandelson was finally sacked last September, with Starmer accusing him of "repeatedly lying" about his relationship with Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial.

The issue took on new dimensions in recent weeks when The Guardian newspaper revealed that the Foreign Office gave Mandelson security clearance to take up the ambassadorship in January 2025, despite the advice of a commission investigating his past.

Ollie Robbins, a former senior Foreign Office official who was sacked by Starmer after the revelations, told parliament yesterday of the "constant pressure" he faced from Downing Street at the time of Mandelson's appointment.
