Accused of espionage, the Metropolitan of Kiev connected to the Russian Church

On the charge of espionage, Metropolitan Pavlo Lebid of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate in Kiev has been put in handcuffs. The Ukrainian SBU, the security services of President Volodymyr Zelensky, say there is strong evidence for this accusation against Lebid.

Pavlo Lebid has been vicar of the Caves Monastery in Kiev since 1994 and a former deputy of the pro-Russian Party of Regions. Lebid, dubbed "Pasha Mercedes" by his opponents because he only travels in luxury cars, is a controversial figure. Has been aligned against Ukrainian operations in Donbass since 2014, opponent of the Euromaidan movement and the students who participated in it, sworn enemy of the mayor of Kyiv Vitaly Klitschko and journalists in general (he attacked them several times, breaking their limbs and cursing them), in 2021 at his insistence he did not hand over to the police a serial killer who had killed 52 people, ready to hand himself over to the police after he confessed. In 2019, above all, Lebid publicly stated that Crimea is not part of Ukraine.

The SBU says it has gathered strong evidence about the metro's involvement. In particular, it was established that in his public speeches he repeatedly offended the religious feelings of Ukrainians, humiliated the views of believers of other faiths and tried to create hostile attitudes towards them, as well as made statements justifying or denying Russia's actions. SBU has also published fragments of personal conversations of the metropolitan, which confirm the accusations made against him. In one of the published conversations he expressed joy at the occupation of Kherson, defining that of the Russian Federation "a war between America and Russia to the last Ukrainian".

International media write that it is easy to understand why "Pasha Mercedes" is currently not enjoying much sympathy in Ukraine, despite the fact that today he tried to retract his statements about Moscow saying that he has always been against the occupation of Ukraine. It is equally easy to understand why the irony about Pavel was spread on social networks today because of the scarf he was wearing at the time of his arrest.

"Nothing strange, only Pasha Mercedes can go out with a Louis Vuitton scarf", they write.
"This clown will finally end up in jail," wrote a pro-Ukraine commentator on Twitter.
While the media today wrote about a Ukrainian plan to take over Crimea, which includes two steps in particular: the removal of the Kerch bridge (a symbol of annexation, which partially collapsed in October due to the explosion of a truck bomb ) and limiting the rights of pro-Russians and collaborators. This was reported by Rbc-Ukraine citing the secretary of the National Security Council of Kyiv Oleksiy Danilov.

According to the secretary, there are 12 important steps in the Ukrainian plan to retake Crimea.
