The remaining ice sheets in the Pyrenees will disappear within ten years due to climate change. This is a strong warning from Spanish scientists, who say that the shrinking of the ice mass continues at a rapid pace.
From the Pyrenees mountain range, which marks the natural border between Spain and France, 28 glaciers have disappeared since 1984.
Scientists at the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology (IPE) say the 17 remaining ice sheets lost two meters in ice thickness last summer, which reached record high temperatures.
Scientists blame climate change for shrinking glaciers, and in particular the 1.5 degrees Celsius rise in temperatures in the Pyrenees region during the 19th century.
"In 1984, a study concluded that there were 45 glaciers in the Pyrenees. There are already 17 left. This year we removed four from the list and we are following five more," says Spanish scientist Juan Ignacio Lopez Moreno.
Measurement of snow depth in the Pyrenees began in the mid-1980s and shows a significant decrease, particularly during spring at altitudes above 2,000 meters.
After studying high-resolution satellite images and photographs taken by aircraft, the summer of 2022 resulted in a loss of up to five meters of ice thickness.
The so-called "Little Ice Age", which occurred between the 14th and 19th centuries, is the last global phase during which glaciers advanced.
Since that time, the decline in ice mass has been continuous, interrupted only by short periods of stabilization and followed by accelerated glacier shrinkage.
