As part of measures to strengthen security and defense in the country, Poland has begun deploying more than 1,000 additional soldiers and 200 military vehicles to its eastern border with Belarus.

It was the Polish Minister of Defense, Mariusz Blaszczak, who announced yesterday the measure, called "Operation Podlachia", according to the Polish news agency, PAP.

Blaszczak said Poland aims to demonstrate that it is prepared to react to any "destabilization attempts" along the border.

Poland's Podlaskie region marks the border between NATO member and Belarus, a former Soviet republic that is closely tied to Russia.

Tensions along the border with Belarus have been rising since Russia launched its full-scale military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
