Fatal accident with 40 dead in Guatemala, bus falls off bridge

At least 40 people have died after their bus plunged off a bridge on Monday on the outskirts of the Guatemalan capital.

Firefighter spokesman Edwin Villagran said the cause of the crash was the bus swerving at the last moment to avoid another massive car accident. Fifteen other people were seriously injured.

The bus had come from Progreso, northeast of the capital. Volunteer fire department spokesman Oscar Sanchez said children were among the victims.

President Bernardo Arevalo expressed his condolences and declared a day of national mourning.
