Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation on Monday after pressure from opposition groups who wanted him to step down.

"To save Romania and Romanian citizens from this crisis, from this useless and negative development, I am resigning from the post of president of Romania," he said in a televised speech, adding that he would leave office on Wednesday.

The move came after the opposition motion filed in parliament to impeach him, AA reports.

"It is a futile action, because in a few months I will leave office. It is a baseless action, because I have never violated the Constitution. It is a harmful action," Iohannis, 65, said in his speech.

In December, Romania's Constitutional Court canceled the presidential runoff scheduled for December 8th.

Far-right Calin Georgescu had won the first round on November 24, sparking accusations of Russian interference and ultimately leading to the annulment of the election by the Constitutional Court.

Two-round elections will now be held on May 4 and a second round if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote on May 18.
