8 dead and over 600 others injured from yesterday's earthquakes in Turkey

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey on Monday evening, killing at least eight people and injuring hundreds, according to Turkish and Syrian officials, two weeks after a massive earthquake killed tens of thousands of people in both countries.

The earthquake hit Turkey's southern Hatay province, near the border with Syria, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) said on Monday.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the province's Defne district, Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said on Monday, adding that there have since been 26 aftershocks.

According to foreign media, 3 people have died in Turkey and 5 others in Syria. In the city of Antakya in the country's southern Hatay province, three men were trapped when a building that had survived the initial quake two weeks ago collapsed, according to their relative, Yahya Hallak.

Two weeks after the February 6 earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the number of victims reaches the figure of 47 thousand victims. In most of the affected areas, searches have been closed, while only 15 buildings in Hatay are continuing.
