An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 has struck Taiwan, the strongest in the last 25 years. Local authorities warned of a tsunami in the neighboring islands of Southern Japan and the Philippines, but the alert was later lifted. So far, 4 people are reported dead and 56 injured, but there are still people trapped under the rubble.
The epicenter was at a depth of 15.5 km off the east coast of the island. The city of Hualien is the worst affected: 26 buildings have collapsed so far across Taiwan, half of them in Hualien.
The earthquake was felt as far as China: in Shanghai, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou and Ningde. The earthquake cut off electricity in several areas of the capital Taipei: more than 87,000 households across the island are still without electricity.
In the capital, the subway was immediately back in operation, even the railways announced that at the moment there are no reports of damage or injuries.
