Love at the beginning, hate at the end, the 'fate' of State Police

The General Directors of the Albanian Police stand out for their sudden resignations that always leave strong doubts. Among the former police directors, the first place for the shortest tenure is held by Veton Gjoliku, who held this post for only two months from November 1998 to January 1999.

He resigned for personal reasons. And yet, it was clear that he had such a short career after disagreements with the Minister of the Interior at the time, Petro Koçi.

The police careers of those who followed him have also been troubled, although attempts were made to separate the police from political influence, and for this reason its headquarters was separated from the building of the Ministry of the Interior, where it was located, to be located in the building of the former Arbanas hotel, where the central offices continue to be.

Veli Myftari also stayed after Veton Gjolik for only one year and left with resignation and then even he had the bad luck to be subjected to a criminal investigation together with a former deputy minister of the interior for the passport scandal, a matter for which the former General Director was arrested.

The biggest minister-police official fight took place between Bilbil Mema and his superior as minister, Ilir Gjon, after the operation to clear Albania of the floating vehicles started at that time.

At that time, Mema, who stayed until the summer of 2002, i.e. at the height of the anti-skaf action, held office for only 1 year and nine months.

He was suspended and fired by the then former Prime Minister, Fatos Nano, and later won the right in court and by the director of the Security Academy, Mema now holds the position of advisor to the former director Gladis Nano (recently dismissed).

Bajram Ibraj had a long life in office, who held the position of number one of the police for more than four years and who passed four ministers such as Gjoni, Stefan Çipa, Luan Rama, Igli Toska.

It was a time of crimes that did not stop and on October 5, 2021, with a resignation full of spelling mistakes, even Ardi Veliu left office, at a time when this "resignation" was seen as wish fulfillment for the government, which signed another General Director (Gledis Nano), even the short-lived one until the day he refused to leave the baton.

Whoever will take the job, it is certain that he will also be a resigned or dismissed. No Director General has stayed with the mandate of the number one police and his relationship has been filled with love at the beginning and hate at the end.
