Tourism 2022, Albanians increase trips by 8.3 percent both inside and outside

Albanians increased their trips inside and outside the country during 2022. The increase is observed for both personal and business trips. The survey of the Institute of Statistics on Tourism, Vacations and Travels highlights some of the trends that emerged in the country during the past year as the first with normality after the COVID-19 pandemic.

"In 2022, the number of trips for personal or business purposes (inside or outside Albania), made by individuals living in Albania aged over 15 years was 3,746,993. The average number of nights of stay for trips made is 5.1 nights. Trips for personal purposes make up 97.4% of total trips, while trips for business purposes make up 2.6% of them. The highest concentrations of completed trips were recorded in the months: August (14.6 %), July (11.9 %), December (11.7 %) and June (11.1 %). The amount of nights of stay (in million) has recorded the highest values ​​in the months of August, July, December and June", states the publication of INSTAT.

According to the figures, in 2022, about 8.3% more trips were recorded throughout Albania and abroad, compared to 2021. The characteristic of this year is the increase in trips for personal and business purposes outside of Albania.

"In 2022, the trips made outside Albania for the purposes of "Vacations and free time" have increased by about 12.5 percentage points, compared to 2021.

If we analyze the distribution of trips according to the duration of the nights of stay, short trips (1-3 nights) in Albania occupy a greater weight (68.6%) than long trips (4+ nights). The situation is different for trips made outside of Albania, where the largest share of them are long trips (68.2%)," notes INSTAT.

The age group that travels the most is 25-34 years old

The data analyzed by INSTAT show that the 25-34 age group is the one that travels the most. "The analysis of trips by age group in 2022 shows us that the highest percentages of trips, inside and outside Albania, were made by the 25-34 age group. The analysis of trips according to the gender of the traveler, in 2022, shows us that the highest percentages of trips, within Albania, were made more by female travelers (50.3%), while trips outside Albania were made more by male travelers (55.3 %)" evaluates INSTAT.

According to INSTAT, it is noted that trips of short duration (1-3 nights) have recorded the highest percentage for the 45-54 age group. While long-duration trips (4+ nights) were made by the 75+ year-old age group.

The destinations where Albanians have traveled the most abroad are the neighboring countries where a good part of Albanian immigrants are also located. INSTAT data show that the most preferred destinations for travel for personal or business purposes in Albania are the counties: Tirana (17.4%), Vlorë (15.2%), Korçë (14.0%) and Durrës (11.2%). In the trips made outside Albania, the highest percentages were registered in: Greece (5.2%), Italy (4.9%) and other countries (Spain, England, etc.) (2.8%).

Trips by type of accommodation and transport

"The most frequent type of accommodation in 2022 is "staying with relatives or friends", followed by the category "hotel" and "accommodation premises for rent" or "second homes or apartments for holidays". In 2022, an increase is observed for the category "staying with relatives or friends" by 5.2 percentage points, while the highest decrease was recorded for the category "Holiday home, wood, camping, (SPA, spa) etc" about 2.9 percentage points INSTANT.

Meanwhile, as far as transport is concerned, the survey reveals that about 3.33 million trips were made via road transport, which make up 88.9% of all trips made in 2022. The highest growth was recorded in air transport with 6.1 percentage points.
