Trucut breast biopsy is a medical procedure, for diagnostic purposes, that is performed by taking a tissue sample from a suspicious area or lesion inside the breast, through a special needle under ultrasound guidance. This procedure is suggested when a mammogram, ultrasound, or clinical examination reveals an abnormality that requires further evaluation. Through it, it is determined whether the breast abnormality is benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
Trucut breast biopsy is a relatively quick and minimally invasive procedure. It is considered a very accurate method for diagnosing breast abnormalities and is less invasive than surgical biopsy options. The main purpose of performing Trucut is to provide the necessary information about the tumor (tumor type, grade, its invasion, etc.).
Taking the bioptic material from the breast is done through several steps:
- The patient lies down, with one arm under the head, and by means of ultrasound, the suspected area is located where the material will be collected.
- The skin is sterilized with betadine.
- The doctor injects local anesthesia into the skin of the breast and into the tissue below the skin of the breast.
- The doctor then advances with a special needle which will be inserted into the breast up to the area where the suspected anomaly is evident. Initially, the patient feels discomfort, but then the procedure usually goes smoothly without abnormal sensations.
- Several samples are taken in the suspected area and placed in a suitable solution.
The procedure is associated with usually minimal risks, of which the patient is aware as he is informed in detail about them and gives his approval before the procedure is performed. The most common risks are bleeding and temporary pain.
The laboratory analysis of the biopsy sample is performed after arrival at our collaborating laboratory in Greece, the sample is subjected to microscopic examinations by a specialized anatomopathologist for the identification of malignant or benign abnormalities.
