The planet's billionaire population continues to grow, writes Forbes.

Forbes counted a record 3,428 billionaires across the globe in this year's ranking, spread across 80 countries and territories.

But more than half of all billionaires – 51% in total – are concentrated in just three countries.

No nation boasts more billionaires than the United States, which has a record 989 with a combined wealth of $8.4 trillion.

This includes 15 of the 20 richest people in the world, including the richest person of all: Elon Musk, who immigrated to the US from South Africa via Canada more than three decades ago.

And America, which had the most billionaires last year, has been extending its lead, with 106 newcomers this year – more than any other country or territory – including famous faces like Dr. Dre, Beyonce Knowles-Carter and Taylor Swift.

China is next with 539 billionaires with a total wealth of $2.2 trillion.

This year marks the highest number of Chinese citizens Forbes has ever found, breaking the 2024 record of 495, as the country benefits from a boom in artificial intelligence and the consumer goods sector.

As a group, Chinese billionaires are $500 billion richer than they were a year ago.

China's richest man is Zhang Yiming, the co-founder of ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, which, in January, agreed to a deal with investors to bring the hugely popular video app to the US in compliance with a law that initially prompted a ban on the platform.

India, the most populous country on the planet, remains the third country with the most billionaires.

A total of 229 Indians, with a combined wealth of $1 trillion, feature on this year's list, up from $941 billion in 2025, thanks to a strong year for its stock market.

They are followed by Germany with 212 billionaires, and Russia, with 147.

Nine of the countries or territories that ranked among the top 10 countries for billionaire citizens last year re-enter the top 10 this year.

The United Kingdom falls from 10th to 12th place, giving up 10th place to Taiwan.

The island nation's growing class of billionaires is emblematic of the country's dominance in electronics manufacturing, with its five richest billionaires all owing their wealth to electronics.

Meanwhile, Pakistan returns to the rankings for the first time since 2010, thanks to newcomer Sualeh Asif ($1.3 billion), the California-based co-founder of artificial intelligence code editing tool Cursor.

As a result, 80 countries and territories have at least one billionaire citizen in 2026. Here are the 10 countries with the most billionaires:
