Around 77% of businesses operating in the Western Balkans have estimated that business costs such as rent, energy and labor have increased in the last 12 months. According to the Balkan Barometer 2024 survey, which was developed by the Regional Cooperation Council, 77% of Albanian enterprises claimed that during the period April 2023-April 2024 the costs for business have increased. Meanwhile, 20% of them have expressed that the costs have remained unchanged and only 2% think that they have decreased.
At the regional level, Bosnia and Herzegovina is among the countries that have the highest number of respondents who state that costs have increased, in Kosovo 68% of the businesses surveyed report an increase as well.
On the other hand, when asked about the level of costs, about 80% of the businesses operating in Serbia and 79% of those that exercise their economic activity in Montenegro express an increase in costs. In contrast, half of the businesses in Kosovo think that costs remain at stable levels unchanged from a year ago.
In general, the figures show that business costs in Albania and the region continue to be high and only a very small percentage of businesses report a reduction in costs over the last year. On average, only 2% of businesses agree with the fact that costs have been reduced.
Even if we analyze the data of the Balkan Barometer for the year 2023, a continuous trend of increasing costs in the entire region, including Albania, is clearly evident. The increase in business costs is often a consequence of inflation, where according to earlier analyzes this macroeconomic indicator has been at high levels.
And while the prices increase, the salary demands from the employees are inevitable. We remind you that our country has experienced salary increases in some sectors recently. Likewise, the energy crisis and the increase in energy prices in Europe and the Balkans is another factor that has contributed to the total increase in business costs.
