The Vorë-Hani i Hoti railway advances/ EBRD opens a tender for the revision

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has opened the first stage of the tender for the review and preparation of the project for the Vorë - Hani i Hoti railway line. Consultants who will show interest in participating in this procedure will also need to carry out design review, procurement support, monitoring, control and reporting.

The procedure will remain open until January 31, 2024 and will be carried out through the EBRD's electronic procurement system. Meanwhile, for the year 2024, the government has allocated an initial budget for the implementation of the project.

The total cost of the project is estimated at 39.25 billion ALL, while funding from the budget for the coming year amounts to 340 million ALL, of which 170 million ALL is a grant. The financing structure for this project consists of a grant awarded by the European Union through the Western Balkans Investment Framework, as well as a loan shared between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank.

The railway line Vorë-Hani i Hoti has a length of about 120 km and crosses the Western Lowlands of Albania, running from south to north. It connects the cities of Vora, Mamurras, Laç, Milot, Lezha, Shkodra and Koplik, while it crosses the Albania/Montenegro state border at Hani e Hoti.

According to the implementation project document, the need for its rehabilitation is great, as the infrastructure of the track has deteriorated due to lack of maintenance, while the maximum speed of train movement is about 40 km/h, and in certain parts it is more lower than 20 km/h. Also, the signaling system is almost non-existent. Meanwhile, the project drawn up for the rehabilitation of this railway line will enable the movement of trains at a speed of 120 km/hour.
