Among the news this week, one that stands out is the gun attack on a herd of 22 horses, which “ended” with the killing of four of them and the wounding of three others. It seems strange that the killing of horses attracts more attention than the daily deaths of a number of people in car accidents or the criminal murders that are reported almost every week.

But perhaps the armed attack on a herd of horses, while they were grazing peacefully in a mountain pasture in the Dukat - Llogora area, is destined to make news precisely because it is an unusual and therefore extremely rare event.

In fact, it was more like a shooting than a murder. The poor horses were killed and washed because greed had punished them. It is said that the shooters, equipped with shotguns, bled the herd for reasons of competition: the owner of the attacked herd was aiming for his share of the tourist riding market. In short, the horses were condemned and executed in the name of greed.

It is a good thing that tourism is creating jobs, and is even encouraging new activities, such as in this case, tourist horseback riding. But you can't even dream of thinking that a developing and civilizing activity like tourism would encourage ancient animal instincts. I mean animal instincts, because even poor horses were animals, and not infrequently animals appear more noble than some two-legged faces.

The location of this crime brought to mind the memories of an English soldier who spent several months in that area during the L2B. Among other things, he noticed that Albanians misbehave with women and pets. We have come a long way, we used to misbehave, now we shoot them…
