The victory of the left, Macron's revenge and uncertainty about the government that will be formed

The one that reached the semi-finals, albeit with some upsets, is not an African side that is received kindly in European football championships. It is precisely France. When Antoine Griezmann came off the field in the quarter-final against Portugal – who also has a German father, a Portuguese mother and a Spanish wife – there were ten black Frenchmen left on the pitch (called black in France) and mostly of African origin or from Middle Eastern, like William Saliba, father from Lebanon and mother from Cameroon. The only white person was the captain of Milan, Theo Hernández, from a Catalan family from Girona, Italian from Verona.

It is wrong to judge people by the color of their skin and where they come from. Even Marine Le Pen says this. But it is also wrong to think that Lepenism is the future of France and Europe.

When people vote in large numbers, as in yesterday's election – a turnout not seen since Mitterrand's first victory – Lepenism is completely defeated.

Describing the children of immigrants as a bunch of barbarians who don't know French, hate everyone, who will live on public benefits until they retire and meanwhile spend their days cooking strange, disgusting-smelling food and their nights playing bongos or beating the police, is a useful caricature to be invited to talk shows and get votes, but it does not reflect today's France and does not unite the majority.

Just analyze yesterday's vote. And just take a tour of Saint-Denis, the immigrant neighborhood that will be the site of the next Olympics, built around the cathedral where the kings of France are buried. Of course, it is not a model neighborhood. But it is not a ghetto, a crime laboratory or an incubator of terrorism. It is a neighborhood of people who work hard to give their children a better perspective. This is what Kylian Mbappé tried to say, with the generosity of the lucky man who is not afraid to expose himself on behalf of others: notice yourself in our country; How would you feel if a third or more of your countrymen voted against you?

Without immigration, France would stop. It wouldn't be what it is. Without Europe, however, it would not be able to afford three trillion euros of public debt; that not all ended up in the suburbs. And, let's be clear, Lepenism was born and flourished for two reasons: hostility to immigrants; and anti-European nationalism. Perhaps this is also the reason why the French like to talk about "turn", break, "change". But then when they get there, like yesterday, in the privacy of the ballot box, the majority's hand shakes a little. Or maybe they are smarter than we think.

Nëse në vend të kësaj – siç ishte shumë, shumë më e mundshme – do të kishte dalë keq, do ta digjte edhe atë. Rassemblement National i tij humbi shumë zona elektorale edhe sepse emëroi personazhe të paparaqitshëm, haptazi racistë – “brebis galeuses”, dele të zeza, i quante Bardella -, që në Francë ende përfaqëson një tabu.

Megjithatë një pjesë e strukturës ekonomike dhe financiare tani e konsideron Marine Le Pen një të keqe më të vogël. Thënë kështu, Marine ka vetëm një mënyrë për t’u bërë presidente në tre vjet: të shkojë në balotazh me Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

Fronti i Ri Popullor ka pasur disa suksese, por nuk është i destinuar të zgjasë. Jo vetëm pro-evropianët e Raphaël Glucksmann, madje edhe socialistët e François Hollande kanë pak të përbashkëta me populizmin e Melenchon dhe gabimet e tij të politikës së jashtme.

Tani në Parlament do të kërkohet një mazhorancë që pasqyron koalicionin disi të panatyrshëm që u krijua në votime: e majta reformiste, e djathta jo-antievropiane, qendra makroniste.

Një shumicë që ka tre vjet për të identifikuar një kandidat të aftë jo vetëm për të mposhtur të djathtën ekstreme, por për të përfaqësuar të gjithë shpirtrat e Francës dhe për të ribashkuar vendin.

Një rol të rëndësishëm mund të ketë luajtur Hollande, ish-presidenti, i cili u rikthye në garë në momentin e duhur.

Sepse, përveç emigracionit dhe Evropës, ka edhe një arsye të tretë pas suksesit të populizmit anti-sistem.

Është varfërimi i shtresës së mesme. 30 vjet më parë, kur Jean-Marie Le Pen arriti sukseset e para, problemi ishte papunësia, fundi i punës. Sot ka punë. Por paguhet shumë pak për t’i dhënë punëtorit një perspektivë për jetën.

Edhe në Francë, të pasurit në të vërtetë arrijnë të shmangin taksat: ata nuk mund të marrin rezidencën tatimore në Monte Carlo, por ata kanë Zvicrën vetëm një hedhje guri larg, madje edhe Belgjika ia vuri syrin kapitalit të madh. Klasa e mesme e gjen veten duke mbajtur peshën e barrës më të madhe tatimore në Evropën kontinentale, në këmbim të shërbimeve që janë më të mira se ato në Itali, por që ende po përkeqësohen me shpejtësi.

If the new government and the new leader that emerges will remain trapped in the redoubt of Paris (not even a constituency in the Rassemblement National) and are unable to pacify deep France and restore it, if not its mood good, then faith, then yesterday's will were the last great test of the republican front.

And Macron will really be able to say, like Louis XV, "behind me, the flood."
