The fire in Finiq

A big fire engulfed today the archaeological park of Finiq, while the Ministry of Defense announced that the cultural wealth of the Archaeological Park has been saved.

"The quick intervention of the operational forces, also assisted by the Armed Forces and the Cougar helicopter from the air, have avoided damage as a result of the fire that occurred this afternoon in the facilities of the archeological park of Finiq. The Minister of Defense Pirro Vengu, accompanied by the mayors of Finiq and Delvina as well as the Prefect of the Vlora district, Kristo Kiço, closely followed the situation", the announcement states.

In a communication to the public, Minister Vengu said that since noon there has been a problematic situation in the plain of the hills that separates the two municipalities, but the coordination of many forces made it possible to extinguish a large part of the outbreaks.

"We are concentrated with 8 fire engines, 40 fire brigades from 2 municipalities as well as 65 members of the Armed Forces. We had long and efficient interventions by the Air Force that made it possible to contain all outbreaks in the direction of residential areas. After them, the economic zones and the park with cultural and archaeological value of Finiq have gained importance", he said.

According to the minister, "it became possible to preserve and protect all the cultural property in the park, the part of the basilica, the old treasury as well as the amphitheater". The Minister of Defense added that this will be a night of vigilance, to keep the situation under full monitoring.

In this operation, numerous forces from the local government structures of the municipalities of Saranda, Himare, Gjirokastër, Dropull and Konispol, supported by the Armed Forces and the Cougar helicopter, were involved.
