For nearly a year, the Albanian economy has been under the hoof of rising inflation. From the moment of the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the prices of all goods experienced an immediate increase, together with fuels.
Already after a year, the detailed indicators of the month of January give us some more data. Oils and fats have already fallen by 10% from their peak in July, along with bread and cereals a drop of 5% according to INSTAT.
Meanwhile, the Board set up to monitor basic foods since September has not made any decision to set new ceiling prices. In the last one, sugar stood at 118 ALL/kg, mass flour 83 ALL/kg, while for long grain rice 101 ALL/kg and oil at 321 ALL.
From the observation that Top Channel made in some supermarkets for these products, cooking oil is being sold at the level of 247 lek, which is approximately 35% cheaper than in the period April - October. Sugar has remained in the country at 118 Lek and flour has a significant increase and is sold between 99 - 125 Lek, 30% more expensive than the ceiling of the Board, while rice is also up to 40% more expensive.
Other products that are not monitored by the Board, such as dairy, prices continued to increase in January at the level of 26.4%. The dairy industry has warned of further increases, but the Competition Authority has placed them under investigation. Fish and meat products have also increased.
In Albanian families, 43% of the income goes to this group of items and price abuse with them is a heavy blow to the monthly costs. The government has soon announced the increase of the minimum wage to 40,000 ALL./Tch
