In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the Italian carabinieri implemented the orders issued by the Bari Court and arrested 8 members of an Albanian-Italian drug trafficking gang. According to the authorities, the group has set up a cocaine and cannabis trafficking network from Albania to Italy, to then distribute it to other European countries such as Spain, Belgium and Germany.
This group allegedly had 15 members, of which 6 were arrested earlier and 8 others were arrested this Tuesday. Of them, 4 are Albanians and 4 are Italians, aged between 34 and 49 years.
The group's activity reached its peak in the period March - August 2023, when they trafficked large quantities of cocaine and marijuana from Albania to Spain and several other Northern European countries.
The drugs were transported to Puglia, where the organization had established its main logistics base, and part of it was destined for the markets of Naples. According to the authorities, the group earned over 1 million euros per month from this activity. Italian media reports that one of the gang's operational centers has been discovered in Albania, but the Albanian authorities have not yet provided details.
Through the wiretapping, investigators were able to reconstruct the structure of the group, defining the roles of each member. Albanian traffickers were particularly active in managing the roads between Albania and Puglia. The group also had bases in Barletta, Mola di Bari and Modugno. Several people were responsible for the storage of narcotics before distribution throughout Puglia.
The group had stable connections with buyers and the proceeds from drug sales were transferred to Albania. In the last operation, more than 15 kg of cocaine, 2 kg of marijuana, weapons and ammunition, including 3 pistols and ammunition of different calibers, were seized. Also, one of the suspects owned 15,000 euros, which is believed to be income from illegal activity.
