A few days after the alarm that baby milk produced by Nestlé was contaminated with the cereulide toxin, the United Kingdom spoke with official figures.

The UK's Health Safety Agency said 36 babies fell ill after consuming contaminated formula, while an investigation has been launched in France into the deaths of two babies.

The same product, imported by Rossmann & Lala , is also marketed in Albania, specifically in this entity's network of stores.

According to official sources from the National Food Authority, the total quantity of imported milk is 1,878 units, of which 462 units have been re-exported to the Republic of Kosovo. In Albania, it turns out that 836 cartons of milk have been blocked.

While the amount of contaminated milk sold is 580 boxes, each weighing 800 grams. This alert from the European Union revealed a problem at the Rossmann & Lala entity in Albania.

After the inspections, the AKU inspectors fined the entity for two violations: deficiencies in the traceability system and failure to fulfill the responsibilities of Food Business Operators (FBOs).

Lack of traceability seriously compromises food safety, and in this case, it concerns a delicate product like baby food.

Simply put, if a product is found to be unsafe (e.g. contaminated or expired), authorities cannot quickly withdraw it from the market because:

• It is not known which supermarkets it ended up in.

• It is unknown how many units were sold.

• Accurate and immediate withdrawal cannot be made.

Due to these violations, the entity Rossmann & Lala has been fined by the AKU. In relation to this issue, TV Ora News also addressed a request for information to the entity, requesting an official position on the violations found by the AKU.

Rossmann & Lala did not respond to the requested information, but asked journalist Alketa Çeku to visit the company's points of sale or head office.

Given that the primary interest remains in informing the public through an official position, this invitation has been declined.

This case brings to attention that food safety is not an administrative formality, but a direct responsibility towards the lives and health of children./ Ora News
