The risk of flooding is looming around the world as a worse winter is expected.
Even during this summer there were floods in several places where many people lost their lives.
Which countries and populations are most at risk of flooding around the world?
Using data from a recent study published in Nature, this graphic map presents the risk of flooding around the world, highlighting the 1.81 billion people directly exposed.

The Netherlands and Bangladesh are the two countries that have more than half of their population at risk of flooding, 59% and 58% respectively. Apart from the Netherlands, only two other European countries are part of the top 20 countries in terms of the percentage of the population at risk, and one of them is Albania.
According to the ranking, 28% of the population (771 thousand people) of our country are at risk of floods, ranking 20th.
The next country is Austria, 18th with 29%.
Vietnam (46%), Egypt (41%) and Myanmar (40%) round out the rest of the top five.
Asian countries most at risk from rising water levels
Not surprisingly, countries with significant coastlines, river systems and plateaus find themselves with high percentages of their populations at risk.
A recent report predicted that water risk (caused by droughts, floods and storms) could consume $5.6 trillion of global GDP by 2050, with floods predicted to account for 36% of these direct losses.
As the human and economic losses caused by floods continue to rise, countries around the world will need to focus on preventive infrastructure and restorative solutions for ecosystems and communities already affected and most vulnerable to flooding.
