The war in the Middle East between the United States and Iran is not going unnoticed in the Western Balkans.

Security experts warn that countries in the region may face the consequences of the conflict, but according to them, the risk of conventional attacks is limited.

Adrian Shtuni, a security expert from the International Counterterrorism Center, told REL that technically, the Islamic Republic has the ability to launch medium-range missiles towards the Balkans. But they would first have to pass over the territory of NATO countries like Turkey and Greece, which have air defense systems.

The expert places more emphasis on indirect risks such as the economic factor, hybrid warfare, terrorism or shifting the attention of allies elsewhere. Shtuni emphasizes that the shift of the West's attention from the Balkans to the Middle East could create space for third actors, such as Russia or groups linked to Iran, to destabilize the region.

In this context, he mentions the possibility of provocations by Serbian paramilitaries, while not ruling out the possibility that Iran may attempt to target the presence of the US military in Kosovo, based on its retaliatory actions against US bases in the Middle East.

He points out that there are radicalized individuals who may not be under direct Iranian control, but who may be motivated by the narrative that the United States is attacking a Muslim country, and carry out terrorist attacks on American targets.

Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina are the two countries in the region that, according to experts, could feel the consequences of the conflict in the Middle East the most, making international vigilance and cooperation more important than ever.
