After nearly 150 hours of real "war" with the flames that engulfed the urban waste field in the Elbasan Landfill, the dramatic situation that shook the city and surrounding areas throughout the past week seems to have finally entered a stabilization phase.

As of 4:00 PM today, after six days of intense fire on the surface and deep within the "waste mountain," there are no more flames and no plumes of smoke rising above the contaminated area.

This comes after an extraordinary logistical and human operation that mobilized firefighting forces, municipal structures, the army, and central institutions.

The entire 20,000 m² surface of the Elbasan Landfill is currently covered with a thick layer of soil, blocking the entry of oxygen and completely isolating combustion inside.

According to official data, over 35 thousand m³ of soil have been dumped. The thickness of the soil in the upper part of the field reaches from 1.5 to 2 meters, while on its sides it ranges from 30 cm to 50 cm.

This extraordinary isolation measure is believed to have brought about the final extinguishing of the fire and the cessation of air pollution, which had been at alarming levels for several days.

The critical situation created at the beginning of the week was faced with an unprecedented reaction after the ultimatum given by Prime Minister Edi

Rama, who demanded that this environmental disaster end at all costs within the weekend. Concentrated and intensive work, in a race against time and environmental risk, has yielded results for the first time in six days, the Elbasan Landfill is calm, without smoke, without fire.

However, the consequences are huge. The environmental carnage that was caused is considered by experts to be one of the worst in the history of this city. The effects on the environment and public health will take time to assess and address.

It now remains to be seen whether the intervention carried out will result in a lasting solution, or just a temporary measure to avoid further deterioration of the situation.
