In the last 5 years, the European Anti-Fraud Office, known as OLAF, has opened 36 investigation cases in the countries of the Western Balkans regarding the misuse or irregularities identified with European funds in the countries where these funds were given.

According to the 2022 report published by OLAF, among the 36 investigations on the countries of the Western Balkans, half are related to the funds given to North Macedonia, or in other words 18 cases of investigation.

In second place is Serbia, with 9 investigations opened against it, while so far 4 recommendations have been presented to the official Belgrade. Three official investigations have been opened on Bosnia-Herzegovina and two recommendations have been filed.

In the Report of the European Anti-Fraud Office for 2023, Kosovo is also included with three cases of investigation and one recommendation. As for Albania, there are two cases of investigation, including the case of 2021 regarding funds in Agriculture, while in Montenegro there is only an open investigation.

In this OLAF report, as far as the member countries of the European Union are concerned, for three years the largest investigations are being carried out in Italy, while Poland and Hungary come after it, which are suspected of having misused the funds given to agriculture. The report of the European anti-fraud office is closed with 255 investigated cases and 275 recommendations.

Olaf is one of two European agencies that directly investigates how community funds are spent together with the Anti-Fraud Coordination Service Unit.

The European Anti-Fraud Office can close its investigations without the culprits, while in cases where abuses of European Union funds are verified, it is the law enforcement agencies in the respective countries that decide on criminal liability against the officials involved.
