Severe weather gripped the rest of the United States on Monday after winter storms swept across the East Coast over the weekend, killing at least 10 people, including nine victims of flooding in Kentucky caused by the rain.

The National Weather Service warned of "a dangerously cold snap" on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to drop to -51 degrees Celsius in Montana, accompanied by strong winds.

Meteorologists say some states will experience the tenth and coldest storm of the season, which is coming from the Arctic.

In Kentucky, Governor Andy Beshear announced on Sunday that the death toll had reached 9.

He said at least 1,000 people stranded by the floods had been rescued. President Donald Trump approved Kentucky's request to declare a state of emergency and authorized the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate relief efforts in the state.

Gov. Beshear said most of the victims were killed when their cars were trapped by high water. Among the victims was a mother and her 7-year-old child.

In Alabama, the storm destroyed several mobile homes, trees and damaged power lines, but there were no human casualties.

In Atlanta, one person died after a large tree fell on his home Sunday morning, according to authorities.

In North Dakota, wind chills and low temperatures are expected to drop to -50 degrees Celsius, while the state remains under a "frost warning."/VOA
