The February 6 earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria was one of the most tragic events in recent years, causing pain around the world. A few hours after several strong and devastating earthquakes, many countries immediately mobilized to help these two countries, while numerous search and rescue groups arrived.
Our country was also among the first to reach out to the Turkish state, sending a group of civil emergency volunteers to help search for lives under the ruins.
Invited to News24 to speak on this topic were Nebi Muçaj, director of the volunteer center for civil emergencies, as well as Turkish doctor working in Albania Taner Akdamar, who was part of the group that went to Turkey to provide help.
They have shared the difficult and dramatic moments they saw in the Malatya area, where they were assigned to help.
"Turkey needed a well-specialized staff to provide this help, both from the medical side and from the search side under the ruins", said Muçaj.
"The Albanian team stayed in the city of Malatya, where 284 buildings, at least 8 stories high, have collapsed. On the third day after the earthquake, we helped a boy by pulling him out of the rubble. Thermal cameras and search dogs helped us the most. We heard a voice... The boy was saved well, we gave him first aid" , said the doctor.
Mucaj says that they helped and brought people alive from the ruins, but according to him, unfortunately, in this area the number of victims was very high.
"All the forces operating under the ruins, the hope and what drove them to work as quickly as possible, was that maybe there would be a human life under the ruins. The emotions, the stress, the part of the family waiting for the other members to be brought out alive from the ruins. In a tragedy, a little hope raised a lot of emotions, when a human life was lost, there were tears of joy in that sadness, but unfortunately where we were, there were not many survivors, but many victims. It was very intensive work, with a very low temperature. Unfortunately it was a hotel where there were many victims under the rubble. In Malatya, search and rescue under the ruins was closed, and we, as a volunteer center, completed our deadline that was set for us" , said Muçaj.
"We have hope until the end, but normally all the authorities lost hope on the fourth and fifth day, because it was a problem and the very low temperatures. In the evening it was -15 degrees, and in the morning it went up to -25 degrees. Until the fourth day, we worked removing the rubble by hand, we broke concrete by hand. Then we operated with an excavator", said the Turkish doctor.
