"They told me to wait 4 years..."/ Over 2 thousand patients waiting to undergo surgical interventions at Trauma

If we analyze confidential internal data from the Trauma Hospital, the consequences of the blockage of operating rooms are alarming.

What you see in the video below is the waiting list for surgeries, obtained exclusively by Inside Story. On that list, there are over 2,000 patients who have been waiting for months to undergo surgical interventions. This queue refers to registrations until December 2025, as the number of patients waiting has increased in recent months. Among them, there are citizens who have been waiting for more than 1 year.

"I want to ask you about an intervention you planned at the Trauma Hospital in March of last year, did you do it? No, they haven't notified us, no communication for a year or so," the citizen said.

"He can't walk at all from his knees, we were in Librazhd, he can't walk at all, he's stuck here. He's been taking medication all over Italy, they're not doing anything for him, he needs surgery," the citizen said.

"No, they didn't notify us at all. We went there, made that planning, left our phone number and now we're waiting. 2 months passed, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year or so, no notification, nothing at all," the citizen said.

"An important element to look at is whether the waiting list extension time is longer than the reconstruction time that has already passed. If this exceeds it, it means that it is not only related to the reconstruction time, but also to other elements. For example, if we have a 3-month delay in reconstruction and the waiting list makes sense that it has been postponed by three months, but if it has been postponed longer, there are other elements as well," said Ilir Alimehmeti, a doctor.

However, the hospital's management told "Inside Story" that it has reduced the waiting list, which in 2022 was up to 6 years of waiting. According to the hospital, the waiting list has currently been reduced to 570 patients.

Trauma: The waiting list for endoprosthesis reached over 1,100 patients at the end of 2022 and the waiting time was 6 years. Since the beginning of 2023, sufficient budgeting has allowed all emergencies to be covered and backlogged interventions to be gradually carried out. Currently, the number of patients waiting has been halved, 570 patients on the list, as a result of removals from the list after surgery and new registrations, and the waiting time has been reduced to about 13 months.

But, in the internal lists provided by Inside Story, it is clear that the number of people waiting until December 2025 is 2002, not counting the patients of 2026. It is true that some of them have received the service, but the question still remains how many of them have received it, how they intervened in the queue and why their names are still on the card...

Some of the patients reported the phenomenon to our editorial office. To understand the extent, we called many of the people on the waiting list, who confirmed the difficult situation. They prefer not to be identified because they fear retaliation and are not in a financial position to resort to private services. The cases and challenges they face are very diverse. One lady told us about the wrong treatment for 9 years, and then, when the problem was understood, she had to wait again to receive medical services.

"I'm waiting, not yet. Do you have any concerns? I have a lot. Where did you have the surgery? I fell, my pelvis, I don't know what it is, but I need a prosthesis. I left it two years ago, I've been doing it for 10 years so I didn't know. They did scans, they showed me those rheumatic diseases, spondyloarthrosis. After 9 years I had an X-ray and it turned out that I was very bad. And in the meantime, are you still waiting? What should we do? We wait.

The doctor said it depends on when the prosthesis will arrive, it could last 1 year, 2 years, 3 years. It depends on what the state requests.

They told me that to put iron in the knee, in the right knee, you will have to wait 4 years. How long do you have to wait for this? They told me 4 years. It's one that writes after the doctor and I told him, I've been there 3-4 times, and I told him it's my turn. No, he said, it's not. I told him how come it's not my turn, I've been waiting for two years to have an operation, how come it's not my turn? Well, he said, the machine breaks down. I told him, but I don't have money", the citizen expressed.

"If it is true that an orthopedic emergency presented in Trauma, due to a lack of rooms, is not done and days or weeks pass, then this is total mismanagement, it is criminal, because the patient has not been given the proper service according to the provisions of the law on health services and the Constitution in the Republic of Albania. In cases of Trauma and immediate emergencies, there can be no waiting and the intervention is recommended to be done immediately. If we say there is a waiting list in Trauma, there should not be one", said the doctor, Besnik Jakaj.
