The number of prisoners who have lost their lives in prisons in Albania resembles a war toll.
In information provided by the Prison Directorate to Top News in October last year, it appears that for the period January 2020-September 2025, 134 people lost their lives within the walls of their cells, while 5 others were declared dead in the first three months of 2026.
The executive director of the Helsinki Committee, Erida Skëndaj, spoke about this issue on the "Breaking" show on Top News with Dafina Hysa.
The head of the Helsinki Committee noted that so far there has been no investigation and zero accountability for these deaths.
"The government should investigate itself to see if there have been cases of negligence or carelessness, when I say itself, I mean through the competent bodies," said Skëndaj.
But was anyone responsible for these losses of life in detention or prison facilities?
"There have been no such cases, and we even had the statement of another citizen who died due to cardiac arrest."
And to avoid his detention due to all the problems he had and we did not see a proper investigation with the information we have about the case in question.
The prison administration issues a template, he died of cardiac arrest.
This is the bulletin and not a single case of the state conducting an administrative and then criminal investigation regarding deaths in prison
"Today I am facing two court cases involving the prisons and the Ministry of Justice. We are actually asking for compensation, and they insist that they are not entitled to it because, according to them, he died there himself, we provided him with services and so on ," said Skëndaj.
