The murder of Judge Astrit Kalaja inside the courtroom shocked public opinion, but not everyone.
A wide wave of absurd reactions erupted on social media justifying the author's criminal act.
The murder came after a long-standing property conflict between the Shkambi family and several families in Shkodra.
After the execution, many online commentators expressed support for the perpetrator, justifying the action with the broad argument that the judicial system in Albania is corrupt and drags out cases.
This situation was further exacerbated by the opening of a GoFundMe page where around $14,000 was raised for the author's lawyer, before the page was closed.
In this context, it is worth noting that the draft of the new Criminal Code, which is still under public consultation, includes precisely an article that aims to punish this type of behavior.
The new article, Article 409 (Supporting the commission of a crime), punishes with imprisonment from one to four years the act of “supporting the perpetrator of the crime for the act he has committed, publicly glorifying his action” and presenting it “as an acceptable solution to the situation”.
If this support is provided through mass media, the punishment increases.
This new legal provision comes as a punitive measure against persons who, instead of condemning violence, support criminal acts in public space, even virtual ones.
