Police: Former ambassador found dead in hotel, death due to natural causes!

Former German ambassador to Albania, Werner Daum, has passed away in Albania, the country he held in his heart and loved deeply.

The German diplomat passed away at the age of 82, while he had been in our country for several days.

He was found dead in his hotel room, while a few days earlier he had participated in the inauguration ceremony of the statue of the martyr of democracy, Josif Budo, in Kavaja.

This morning he had a meeting with a person in the hotel lobby, and the person in question showed up at the reception at 10:20. 

Mr. Wermer Daum did not answer the phone and after the staff entered his room in a state of concern, they found him lifeless in bed.

Werner Daum served as Germany's ambassador to Tirana from 1987 to 1990, in a crucial period for the country's future.

During this time, he showed extraordinary courage, opening the doors of the German embassy to Albanians seeking to escape the communist regime, an action he did in complete contradiction to the official instructions of his government.

Police announcement:

At around 12:30, in Golem, in a hotel room, citizen W. D, 82 years old (former German ambassador), was found without signs of life.

Preliminary examination revealed no signs of violence. It is suspected that death was due to natural causes.

The investigation team is at the scene and is continuing to work to fully clarify the circumstances of the case.
