The Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime has reported the final conclusions for Democratic Party MP Qani Xhafa, who is accused of driving while impaired.

The Special Court in the session asked SPAK to take into account the fact that he is a member of parliament and a family member and consequently to sentence him to probation.

His lawyer requested the minimum sentence of either community service or a fine.

"My client has admitted to the incident. His behavior shows that he is an educated man. That day he had a family party with friends and was returning to his apartment. We are requesting the minimum sentence or community service, or a fine," Xhafa's lawyer said at the hearing.

The Special Prosecution Office ultimately requested that the 6-month prison sentence be converted into 1 year of probation. Also, after the lawyer requested that he be sentenced to a fine, SPAK agreed that the defendant could pay an amount in favor of the state as a way of serving his sentence.

After that, the Special Court retired to the Deliberation Chamber to make a decision.

According to SPAK, MP Xhafa, while intoxicated, was driving his vehicle and had an accident, colliding with a street lighting pole.

Qani Xhafa ran as a deputy for the Democratic Party in the May 11 elections. He was on the open list, where he came first among the Democratic candidates with about 6,000 votes for him, but without managing to enter Parliament.
