The private American mission to the moon launched on Monday has encountered technical problems.
Astrobotic, the company behind the project, says its Peregrine spacecraft has experienced an "anomaly" that has prevented it from pointing its solar panels steadily at the Sun.
Without the ability to charge the batteries and maintain a power supply, the mission will not be able to continue.
Astrobotic said engineers are working on the issue and will provide updates when more information becomes available.
The 1.2-ton payload was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on a Vulcan rocket.
It aims to become the first US mission in half a century to make a soft landing on the Moon, the first attempt to do so by a private company.
The US space agency has bought space on the probe for five instruments to study the lunar environment before sending astronauts later this decade.
