Albania in 1991 had just emerged from decades of total isolation under the communist regime. Some phenomena that were little or not known, began to appear openly. Those who were known as problem boys in communism, turned into neighborhood stalwarts in democracy. And further, these strongmen turned into leaders of criminal groups that were moving from ordinary crimes to trafficking and beyond.
"People who expect democracy and try to adapt to the new rules created by society, such as the free market economy, equality before the law, but also the freedoms that accompany the individual who, if he does not understand democracy well, gets into the street, someone is killed, someone is sawed off" says the former prosecutor, Shkëlqim Hajdari
Young boys with problematic character started to organize themselves in groups identified according to neighborhoods. Thus, we had the boys from Bardhyl Street, the Train Station Boys, those from Kavaja Street, etc. They had great ambition for glory and authority in their areas. It was early enough to talk about the levels of crime we know today. Their first crimes were mostly trivial events. They considered themselves as protectors of the communities in their neighborhoods.
"There were not only 2 gangs, the so-called ones in Durrës restaurant and Bardhyl street. There were many other gangs in Tirana that little has been said. There have been very powerful groups in Elbasan street, Ali demit area, Rardhyl street, former Durrësi restaurant, Tirana e Re, Selita, kombinati and kemi Babrrune, all of these had their own groups. Groups that were in a certain territory with their criminal background. Only in the groups of Elbasan street from 1991-1996 we have 24 people, young boys killed. They were killed for a motorcycle, for a bicycle, for a game, for a debt, for harassing a girl' said the professor of criminology, Ervin Karamuço
Two of the most dangerous areas for the population at that time were Bardhyl Street and the former Durrësi restaurant. In these neighborhoods, the first and strongest groups of Tirana were identified that were in rivalry between them. The groups were headed by Gaz Muça from Bardhyl Street and Naim Zyberi from Durrës, a former restaurateur.
"There were two phenomena of two neighborhoods, that in their neighborhoods they were the first, of course, that the roosters of the neighborhoods would collide and the collision was fatal," said Shkëlqim Hajdari, former prosecutor
I had seen Gazmend Muça himself riding a horse and walking on the streets, between Bardhyl Street and Hospital Street. Together with my peers, we were saying who is this beautiful, handsome Simatic boy who walked like a Serb and how he made eyes,' said the journalist, Roland Qafoku.
Taulanti, ishte vëllai i vogël i Gaz Muçës.
Naim Zyberi, Franc Konomi and all the other characters were afraid of him simply because he was strong. There was an incident, the famous story of a slap against Taulanti and the fact is that Taulanti never told Gazi that he shot me with his palm but they were afraid that he would have told him and that he will now do something to us and that's where it came from murder' said the journalist, Roland Qafoku
'All' of Tirana at the funeral, ex-prosecutor: I looked at the scene of the murder of Gaz Muça and...
Naim Zyberi thought that it would be better to attack first instead of waiting for revenge. So just a few days later, on April 7, 1992, Gaz Muca would be executed in the middle of Tirana.
In the area of Xhamllik near his house, Gaz Muça was drinking coffee in a newly opened bar. Suddenly, a car suddenly stops in front of the bar. Gaz Muça immediately realizes that he was the target. But he does not have time to act, a volley of shots comes in his direction. The boys of the Durrsit restaurant empty their machines to the end.
"I was in the inspection of Gaz Muça's place and there was a large amount of shells thrown on his body so that it looked like his whole beautiful body was folded, it was sawed by the large number of bullets that he had taken," said the former the prosecutor, Shkëlqim Hajdari
The event shocked the entire community of Tirana at that time. Never had so many people been seen at a funeral except for the occasion of escorting the dictator to his final residence. Years later, a video of the funeral ceremony was circulated when many effective police officers participated. They even created formations of honor and shot guns in the air in honor of Gaz Muça, swearing revenge.
The murder happened on April 7, 1992, one of the most serious events. Today when you kill a criminal some rejoice. I have not seen any funeral in Tirana with such participation as the one for Gaz Muca, who calls him to the herd. The whole of Tirana took part, because he was a kind of Robin Hood that people loved,' said the journalist, Roland Qafoku.
It is a murder that happened for a completely banal motive for a motorcycle that was taken by his own brother. They came and killed him, they were punished at that time, but then they came out in 1997 and those who killed Gaz Muca were killed' said the professor of criminology, Ervin Karamuço.
