Court hearings in the case of the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, began today, July 7, at the GJKOO.
Veliaj is not present at the hearing. This is because he refused to remain in the glass cage. Present in the hall is Valmir Xoxa, one of the suspects in this process.
What happens in the session?
It is learned that Veliaj has sent a statement to the court. He said that he wants to be represented in the process by his lawyer, Plarent Ndreca. "I have learned about the court session. I want to be represented by lawyer Plarent Ndreca," said the mayor of Tirana.
Veliaj's wife, Ajola Xoxa, is also not present at the GJKKO. She is also represented by a lawyer.
Earlier, the court rejected Veliaj's request to broadcast the court session live. His request not to be in the glass cage was also rejected.
The prosecutor in the case, Ols Dado, has argued that being held in a cage does not constitute degrading treatment. According to him, being held in it is a necessary measure to guarantee a safe trial.
We recall that the Prosecution has filed 13 charges against Erion Veliaj, including passive corruption in several cases, money laundering, failure to declare assets, abuse of office and bringing prohibited items into prison. According to SPAK, most of the charges are related to receiving illegal benefits in 9 cases, where the companies involved have obtained construction permits and public funds from the Municipality of Tirana, in exchange for monetary favors and real estate.
His wife, Ajola Xoxa, is also accused of passive corruption in 9 cases, as well as concealing income, failing to declare assets, and money laundering.
Other accused persons include various businessmen, who according to the prosecution have committed active corruption against high-ranking officials and local elected officials, as well as concealing and laundering illegal income.
