The depopulation of Albania as a result of emigration has been a problem raised with concern, especially in recent years. According to the UN, in the last three decades, about 1.2 million citizens have left Albania. The international scientific journal "The Lancet" reports that the population of Albania may be halved by the year 2100.

Meanwhile, Albania has the third largest diaspora in the world, according to a UN report. According to this list, 30.7 percent of the Albanian population lives in the diaspora.

As a result, the cities of Albania have had the fastest and highest depopulation of any other European country, for the years 2015-2021, according to Eurostat statistics .

Gjirokastra has depopulated by 3% in 6 years, the highest in the country and Europe. Behind it are Berat and Dibra with 2.4 and 2.3 population declines. Only Tirana has experienced population growth in these years, by 1.5%. Apart from Tirana, which is divided as an area with a majority urban population and Shkodra, with a balance of urban and rural population, the other cities are classified as only rural.

According to Eurostat, depopulation depends on the birth-death ratio, migration and emigration.

The country with the largest population growth for the years 2015-2021 was the Greek island of Samos with 2.8% per year.

The report states that in Europe, according to age groups, the +65-year-olds have increased in rural areas, while those 20-64, but also younger than 20 years old, are decreasing. The opposite has happened in the urban areas of Europe. In this indicator, which is measured according to the number of +65 year olds versus those under 65 who are economically active, expressed as a percentage, Albania is reported to be below the EU average of 35.4%. Kukësi and Lezha have the highest number of elderly in relation to the younger population, 27.8%.
