For 24 hours, the country's three largest hydropower plants, located in the Drin Cascade, have opened the discharge gates due to the heavy rains that have covered the entire northern area of Albania.

Meanwhile, the three hydropower plants of the cascade, that of Fierza, Koman and Vau Deja, are working at maximum capacity, discharging even those large amounts of water. According to the Institute of Geosciences, during the last 24 hours, an average of 65 millimeters of rain fell in the basin of Koman and Vau de Deja, while in that of Fierza, about 30 millimeters. This has influenced the rapid increase of the level in the basins of these hydropower plants. Also, in the area of the Alps; in Theth and Valbona, the amount of precipitation has reached the critical point with over 120 millimeters of rain.

Currently, the water level in Lake Fierza, the largest in Albania, is at the quota of about 289 meters, only 7 meters from the maximum quota, while in the Koman hydropower plant the water level has reached 166 meters and in Vau Dejës at over 72 meters.

The Vaut de Deja hydropower plant, which is located only 15 kilometers from the city of Shkodra, is currently dealing with the largest flows, forcing KESH specialists to increase the discharge level to more than 600 cubic meters of water per second from the tunnel Qursaq dam.

According to civil emergencies, so far there are no problems in the area of Nenshkodra, in Lezha, nor in Kukës, but the Minister of Defense Niko Peleshi warned that, during the evening hours and in the future, the situation is expected to worsen even more due to the rains with very high intensity.

"Flows in the Cascade of the Drin River will increase from today's morning and will continue to increase until January 21 due to the return of heavy rainfall. The hourly flow peak is expected to reach the values: for Fierza up to 2500 cubic meters per second, in Koman 2200 cubic meters per second, in Vau i Dejas 1100 cubic meters per second. According to the calculations of the meterological model, in the Drin River, the peak of the total flow schedule, during this hydrological event, is expected to reach up to 5800 cubic meters per second".

Meanwhile, the National Civil Protection Agency has asked the municipalities to take the necessary measures to notify the population at risk, as well as to increase readiness for water reservoirs, reservoirs, road infrastructure and the supply of electricity and water to residents.

The rainfall and discharges forced by the Drin Cascade hydropower plants almost every year threaten the area of Nënshkodra and Lezha with flooding, causing great damage to the economy of thousands of families, but also to the environment./VOA
