This year-end, turkey will be absent from the festive tables of many families in Durrës. High prices, the economic crisis and low incomes make it difficult to buy.
- You saw the turkeys, but you didn't buy them. Why?
- Very expensive. 13 thousand kilos. Sin. We have no power. Rama gave us 50 thousand lek. It costs 100 thousand ALL. They put us in and they put us in alive. Comes 10 kg live weight. How do you get it?!" - said the residents
"We can't reach it. I see them and go away. We look forward to seeing you in the new year.” - says the woman.
"We have no finances. 152 thousand pension. It doesn't work out, neither me nor my wife. I see them. Why should I kill myself?!
- Hoping that you will buy it next year?
- Ishallah we have died!"- they said.
The price of turkey has increased significantly compared to a year ago, when it was bought for 700-800 ALL/kg live weight. It is not only pensioners who find it impossible to buy it.
"Very expensive. 11,000 lek per kilogram of live weight for turkeys and 13,000 for chickens. We cannot afford to receive them. That's how I told him: I'll take a picture of you and take it to the reeds so they can see it in front of the table for the new year... we bought it years ago. This year, unaffordable.”
Even the turkey traders feel sorry for the low purchasing power in the market, as they have spent a lot of money on raising them.
"I come from Kavaja. Because the cost is high, the price increases. I feed them corn and olives. They are grounds, not stables."
Dissatisfied with the market this year, Flamuri also comes every day from the Youth Sector to sell his turkeys in Durrës.
"Weak that there are no buyers. Food was also expensive. It is expensive. They can't afford it. I don't know what happens."
Farmers from different areas of Central Albania and Myzeqeja travel every day to Durrës in the hope that the purchasing power in a big city will be higher and at least they will be able to cover the expenses incurred./Tch
