What is happening to humanity? Abortions are increasing, the number of babies

The number of babies born fell sharply last year (9.8%), but on the other hand, the abortion rate (termination of pregnancy per 1,000 live births) increased for the second year in a row.

INSTAT reported that in 2022 there were 170 abortions per 1000 births from 164, which was this indicator in 2021.

The number of abortions in 2022 was 4,199. The birth-abortion ratio shows that for every 5.9 births, there was also an abortion.

Spontaneous abortions carry the largest share of abortions, constituting 83.9% of the total. The majority of abortions are performed by women in the age group of 20-34 years, which is also the most reproductive age group of women. Abortions are classified into spontaneous and induced. Induced abortion is an action undertaken with the intention of terminating the pregnancy mainly for health reasons. All other abortions are considered spontaneous.

The abortion ratio for the 15-19 age group turns out to be high at the age of 19, where the highest value of this indicator is observed: 119 abortions per 1,000 live births.

Over the years, it has been noted that women with a lower level of education have the highest percentage of abortions performed. Last year, 29.4% of women with 9 years of education performed abortions, compared to 24.6% of women with higher education.

According to marital status, 71.6% of abortions were performed by married women and 7.5% by single women.

Abortions performed by unemployed or uninsured women, over the years, follow the same trend and approximate levels.

In 2022, the percentage of abortions performed by employed women decreased by 1.7 percentage points, compared to the previous year.

Year after year, spontaneous abortions are increasing, due to pregnancy complications. Obstetricians explain that marriages at older ages and the high level of pollution often cause involuntary termination of pregnancies.

A regional study has found that in the capitals of the Balkan states there is a decrease in fertility and a high level of abortions due to pollution that is much higher than the rates recommended by the World Health Organization.
