NAME/ Who is the Albanian who ended his life in the "ship-camp" of
Leonard Farruk

A 27-year-old Albanian ended his life in England about a week ago, while the British media have revealed his identity. Leonard Farruku, 27 years old, from Manza e Durrës, is the Albanian who committed suicide on the ship Bibby Stockholm where asylum seekers registered in Britain are kept.

The identity of the victim, who was found dead last week, has been revealed by 'The Telegraph', which writes that the young man paid €4,000 to cross the English Channel in a dinghy, entering Britain illegally last summer.

The suicide became public on Wednesday while the media reported that the Albanian asylum seeker had complained about his mental state the day before he died. Witnesses told British media that the 27-year-old was heard screaming and banging against the wall of the cabin where he was being held.

His sister Jola Dushku, 33, who lives in Lombardy, Italy, said she was shocked by the news, which she heard from relatives in the UK. She has declared that "she will find peace only when she learns the truth about what happened that night with her brother on the hotel ship Bibby Stockholm".

"When I spoke to him the last time, he told me that the guards were treating him like animals," said Farruk's sister.

“My brother, when he arrived in the UK, gave the Home Office the address of our relatives in London. They were contacted by the police who told them what had happened.

"According to our relatives who are in contact with the police, Leonard had some problems that night at 11 pm and was calmed down by the guard. At 3 o'clock in the morning he was found dead. We have no more details about how he died.”
According to her, Leonard immigrated to England for a better life and to obtain a residence permit. She has told the British media that precisely for this reason, her brother obeyed the request of the Home Office to go and stay on that ship, where he ended his life.

"He came to the UK with the dream of finding better work and, most importantly, of getting indefinite leave to remain in the UK," Dushku said.

"He said, "Yes," when he was told that his new accommodation would be on that boat where he spent the last days of his life," she said.

She said they had lost both their parents, a loss that changed her brother.

"Leonard became a different person when our mother died. Her death changed him," she said.

Regarding this event, a spokesperson for the Home Office said that this was a tragic incident and the incident is under investigation.

"This was a tragic incident and our condolences go out to those affected. The well-being of those in our care is of primary importance and we take responsibility for this very seriously. This incident is being investigated by the police and the forensic medicine in analyzing the facts and circumstances of this death".

It is thought that currently, 300 male asylum seekers are placed in the hotel ship "Bibby Stockholm" which has a capacity of up to 506 people.
