The drama of Fatmira from Durrës

The January floods in neighborhood 14 of Shkozet, in Durrës, left behind not only material damage, but also serious human tragedies.

One of them is the story of Fatmira Mehmeti, 55 years old, blind and disabled from the first group, who faced the horror of water that invaded her apartment within a few minutes.

Fatmira was living alone when the storm and the flood destroyed everything. “The water rushed into the house and everything stopped working. At that moment I thought my life was in danger,” she says. Only the intervention of her brother and some relatives made it possible to get her out of the apartment.

Today, Fatmira's house is uninhabitable. It no longer has windows or a roof, while the damage is total. For this reason, the 55-year-old was forced to leave and currently lives in rent, paying 200 thousand old lek per month. In addition to the rent, she also faces other expenses, as she pays 150 thousand old lek for the caretaker who comes to her three times a day to help her.

Although she is in difficult conditions and lives alone, Fatmira says that to date she has not received any concrete help to cope with the consequences of the floods.

Fiks Fare inquired about Mrs. Mehmeti's problem at the Municipality of Durrës, to find out if any measures had been taken for her shelter. Regarding this situation, the Municipality of Durrës announced that working groups have been on the ground and have drafted an act of assessment of the damages after the flood of January 6, 2026.

According to the municipality, there are about 2500 families in its territory that have been affected by the recent floods, but no compensation fund or rental bonus has yet been approved. In its response to the Fiks Fare program, the municipality, referring to the Council of Ministers Decision no. 329, dated 16.05.2012, explains that after the completion of the on-site assessment, the process of calculating the damages in monetary value will continue.

Following the continued interest in the show, the Municipality of Durrës has confirmed that it will take concrete steps to address this situation. According to the municipality, a working group will be established consisting of employees of the Directorate of Social Services and engineers, who will go to Ms. Mehmeti's apartment to closely assess the damage caused by the floods.

The municipality then undertakes to intervene to repair the house and replace the damaged electrical appliances and furniture. The municipality also explains that donations from Qatar and China, intended for families affected by the recent floods, will be used for this intervention./ Fiks Fare
