Kurum hazardous waste, court leaves 8 people in prison, changes security measures for several others

The Durrës Court today announced security measures for the 20 people arrested as part of the investigation into the Kurum hazardous waste issue.

After reviewing the Prosecution's request, the trial panel imposed different measures, depending on the role and suspicions of each of those involved.

In total, 8 people have been remanded in custody, as suspects for crimes related to smuggling and illegal waste management.

For three citizens, the measure "prison arrest" was replaced with "house arrest", while for some suspects of abuse of office, house arrest was lifted and a ban on leaving the country was imposed, as well as an obligation to periodically report to the judicial police.

Another suspect, initially arrested in prison for abuse of office, will now be investigated under house arrest.

1. Citizen RB - suspected of the criminal offense "Smuggling of prohibited or restricted goods" and "Waste management" - House arrest

2. Citizen Sh.H. - suspected of the criminal offense "Smuggling of prohibited or restricted goods" and "Forgery of documents" - Arrest in prison

3. Citizen MZ - suspected of the criminal offense "Forgery of documents" and "Laundering of proceeds of criminal activity"; - House arrest

4. Citizen MH - suspected of the criminal offense "Smuggling by employees related to customs activity" - Arrest in prison

5. Citizen NB - suspected of the criminal offense "Waste Management"; - Arrest in prison

6. Citizen AP - suspected of the criminal offense "Waste Management"; - Arrest in Prison

7. Citizen JK - suspected of the criminal offense "Smuggling by employees related to customs activity"; - Prohibition of leaving the country and Obligation to report to the judicial police

From the samples taken from 11 of the 102 containers, it was found that they have very high contents of zinc and iron, accompanied by lead, copper, chlorine and sulfur. The containers are located in the Porto Romano area, near the Ecological Park, where they were taken over by the Agency for the Administration of Sequestered and Confiscated Assets. The waste remains there under strict supervision until the conclusion of the investigations by the prosecution body.
