Teacher expelled for promoting Jehovah in 9th grade school, Education Department explains case

A teacher at the 9-year-old "Gustav Mayer" school in Tirana has been dismissed from his job, after being suspected of carrying out religious propaganda on school premises, specifically regarding the religion of Jehovah's Witnesses.

His dismissal took place on February 6, 2026, while the Regional Directorate of Pre-University Education in Tirana has also officially reacted to this case, providing details on the procedures followed.

According to the official explanation, everything started after a complaint filed by two parents on February 2, 2026. "Following the complaint filed by two parents on 02.02.2026, the Directorate of the 9-year school 'Gustav Mayer' immediately carried out the relevant verifications ," the statement of the Regional Educational Directorate states.

The verifications were carried out in cooperation with the institution's psychosocial service. Representatives of the school principals and the psychosocial service entered the lesson developed by the teacher and administered the materials that he used during the teaching process. " As part of this process, the directorate and the psychosocial service entered the lesson and administered the relevant materials ," the Education Directorate further explains.

After the verifications were completed, the case of the teacher, citizen DZ, was followed up according to the legal and institutional procedures in force. The Education Directorate informs that on February 2, 2026, the school directorate referred the case to the Ethics Commission. “With letter no. 29 prot., the case was forwarded to the Ethics Commission, which met on the same date,” the announcement states.

The Disciplinary Commission met on February 3, 2026 and made the final decision. According to the Directorate, the decision was made by secret ballot, where the overwhelming majority of members voted for dismissal. “The Disciplinary Commission, with 7 votes in favor, decided on the disciplinary measure 'dismissal',” the official statement says.

The Educational Directorate underlines that the entire process has been carried out in full compliance with the legislation in force, including the Labor Code of the Republic of Albania, Law No. 69/2012 “ On the Pre-University Education System”, the Regulation on the Functioning of Pre-University Educational Institutions and the Code of Ethics for Teachers. In this context, the school directorate has initiated the procedure for the unilateral termination of the employment contract.

Meanwhile, the Regional Education Directorate emphasizes that the teacher's rights to be heard have also been respected. " In compliance with the deadlines and the right to be heard, the teacher has been notified to appear on 09.02.2026, in order to present his position regarding the decision taken," the statement explains.

Since February 3, 2026, teacher DZ has no longer taught classes at the 9-year "Gustav Mayer" school.
